LOPA module integration FPSO

MAR Consulting was contracted to support with a layers of protection analysis (LOPA) of one module integration in a floating production, storage and offloading (FPSO) vessel. The project may require additional barriers to protect the new equipment to be installed. These barriers can be, among other options, safety instrumented functions (SIF). LOPA is one method to allocate safety integrity levels (SIL) to SIFs if additional risk reduction is necessary. The objectives of the LOPA/ SIL allocation were to: Verify if the existing barriers are sufficient, and the risk level is sufficiently reduced such that the tolerability criteria is achieved to […]

SAFOP wellhead platform central North Sea

Introduction MAR Consulting facilitated a Safety and Operability (SAFOP) workshop of the electrical equipment in an offshore wellhead platform for an ultra-HPHT (high pressure high temperature) gas condensate field located in the Central North Sea. The online workshop was attended by discipline experts from engineering contractors and subcontractors as well as the asset operator. The objectives of this SAFOP were to: Assess and minimize potential hazards to persons around or in the electrical installations; Provide a critical review of the electrical system design and equipment, assess any limitations and their effects on operability, safety and security of the system; Analyse […]

QA/QC RAM analysis turret and mooring FPSO

MAR Consulting provided quality assurance (QA) and quality control (QC) of a Reliability, Availability and Maintainability (RAM) analysis of a turret and mooring of a Floating Production, Storage and Offloading (FPSO) vessel. The system consisted of a single point mooring and submerged turret production (STP), based on technology developed by the client. The RAM analysis documented the methodology and results in terms of production efficiency for the turret and mooring system.

FSA 3 overpressure protection functions

MAR Consulting was contracted to perform a functional safety assessment (FSA) stage 3 of overpressure protection functions in an offshore platform in the Norwegian Continental Shelf (NCS). The main objective of an FSA is to demonstrate compliance with IEC 61511 and 61508 functional safety standards, NOROG 070, and Petroleum Safety Authority (PSA) regulations through an independent assessment of the development process. Hence, the FSA process is a fundamental tool to ensure that the Safety Instrumented System (SIS) fulfills its requirements as an active barrier to reduce risk to acceptable levels. The FSA team shall have some degree of independence to […]

3rd party investigative study of ESD and SIS of offshore asset

MAR Consulting performed an investigation on the safety systems of an offshore platform in the UK sector. Focus was on the Emergency Shutdown (ESD) and Anclilliary systems such as Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS). A list of findings and deviations of the current design and design documentation was presented to the client. The outcome will be used by the client to improve the safety of the design and meet requirements from UK regulators.

RAM analysis subsea tie-back

MAR Consulting supported the development of a Reliability, Availability, and Maintainability (RAM) study for a new field subsea tie-back in the Norwegian Continental Shelf (NCS). The objective of the study was to provide the production efficiency (PE) estimates for the subsea field value chain in accordance with a revised base case and a high-level assessment for other three cases with different number of wells. In addition, a sensitivity analysis was performed for increased mobilization times due to no spare parts for the subsea production system (SPS), and subsea umbilical riser flowline (SURF).

HVAC system design review of FPSO lifetime extension

MAR Consulting facilitated a Design Review for the HVAC systems in a Floating Production, Storage and Offloading (FPSO) vessel, as part of lifetime extension modifications. The workshop was performed online with discipline experts from Engineering Contractors and Operator. The workshop was structured as a qualitative analysis following a list of guidewords to make use of the multidisciplinary experience and knowledge of the participants. The objectives of the workshop were to: Identify gaps towards Authorities rules & regulations and Client / project requirements; Review the current design with regards to safety, operability, and maintainability, i.e., areas where it may represent a […]

BOP FMECA update to API S53 5th Edition

MAR Consulting AS updated a Failure Modes, Effect, Criticality and Diagnostics Analysis (FMECA / FMEDA) of the hydraulic control and safety systems of a major drilling contractor’s subsea drilling BOP. MAR Consulting had performed the previous original FMECA / FMEDA based on API S53 4th Edition and the US Code of Federal Regulations (CFR). The new rig contract requires compliance with API S53 5th Edition and therefore warranted the update. And it is outside the Gulf of Mexico where the US CFRs are not applicable. This work is part of the partnership to develop a BOP digital twin and failure […]

FMEDA Deepwater drilling blow-out preventer

MAR Consulting facilitated and documented a Failure Modes, Effect, Criticality and Diagnostics Analysis (FMECA / FMEDA) of a deepwater drilling blow-out preventer of a major drilling contractor’s subsea drilling BOP. This work is part of an extended partnership to to cover the entire fleet of drilling rigs and ships. Description of projects MAR Consulting has been involved as part of this partnership: FMECA BOP subsea drilling safety system · MAR Consulting; FMECA / FMEDA subsea drilling BOP (electrical and hydraulic systems) · MAR Consulting; FMECA of redundant subsea BOP deadman-autoshear · MAR Consulting; FMEA of electrical and control systems in […]
