EHAZOP wind power onshore station

MAR Consulting performed an Electrical Hazard and Operability (EHAZOP) analysis of an electrical onshore station for a major OEM. The station receives power generated from offshore wind turbines (North Sea). The project was in the basic design phase, entering detailed design. Objectives of the EHAZOP The objectives were to: Evaluate the electric design with regards to safety and operability to avoid accidents and incidents; Ensure that design is fit for purpose and provides sufficient reliability, availability, and maintainability; Identify areas of improvement. Scope of the EHAZOP for wind power onshore station The E-HAZOP covered the high-power transmission and auxiliary systems. […]

Electrical SAFOP E-HAZOP LNG project

MAR Consulting AS facilitated online a 7-day electrical safety and operability (SAFOP / E-HAZOP) analysis for a new liquified natural gas (LNG) development in the USA. SAFOP is also often referred to as an electrical hazard and operability (E-HAZOP) analysis. However, besides the technical system operability study, it can also include a more classical hazard identification (HAZID) and an operator task analysis. In this project, the client required system operability and a HAZID to identify potential hazards on the electrical design of the LNG plant. An operator task analysis was not included since the project was just entering the detailed […]

FMEDA Deepwater drilling blow-out preventer

MAR Consulting facilitated and documented a Failure Modes, Effect, Criticality and Diagnostics Analysis (FMECA / FMEDA) of a deepwater drilling blow-out preventer of a major drilling contractor’s subsea drilling BOP. This work is part of an extended partnership to to cover the entire fleet of drilling rigs and ships. Description of projects MAR Consulting has been involved as part of this partnership: FMECA BOP subsea drilling safety system · MAR Consulting; FMECA / FMEDA subsea drilling BOP (electrical and hydraulic systems) · MAR Consulting; FMECA of redundant subsea BOP deadman-autoshear · MAR Consulting; FMEA of electrical and control systems in […]

EHAZOP offshore wind power transmission platform

MAR Consulting performed an Electrical Hazard and Operability (EHAZOP) analysis of an offshore wind power transmission platform. The platform receives AC power generated by wind turbines and distributes it to shore via a High Voltage DC link. Objectives of the EHAZOP The main objectives were to: Evaluate the electric design with regards to safety and operability to avoid accidents and incidents; Ensure that design is fit for purpose and provides sufficient reliability, availability, and maintainability; Identify areas of improvement. Scope of the EHAZOP for offshore wind power platform The E-HAZOP covered the high-power transmission systems: Gas Insulated Switchgears (GIS), transformer, […]

Communication link design based on availability

MAR Consulting assisted a client in evaluating (satellite) communication link design solutions from operability, availability, and cost stand-point. The services of the communication link between the unmanned surface vessel (USV) are: Transfer payload data generated during seabed surveys or subsea inspections; Control and operate the USV, in emergency situations; Control and operate the unmanned launch and recovery system, in emergency situations; Control and operate the autonomous underwater vehicles, in emergency situations. The different services listed above have different requirements, such as data transfer capability and latency. MAR Consulting proposed several options to fulfill these operational requirements. We focused particularly on […]

FMECA BOP subsea drilling safety system

MAR Consulting facilitated and documented a Failure Modes, Effect, Criticality and Diagnostics Analysis (FMECA / FMEDA) of the hydraulic control and safety systems of a major drilling contractor’s subsea drilling BOP. This work is part of an extended partnership to to cover the entire fleet of drilling rigs and ships. Description of projects MAR Consulting has been involved as part of this partnership: FMECA / FMEDA subsea drilling BOP (electrical and hydraulic systems) · MAR Consulting; FMEA of electrical and control systems in subsea BOP · MAR Consulting; FMECA of redundant subsea BOP deadman-autoshear · MAR Consulting; FMECA electrical and […]

FTA of subsea BOP control and safety system

MAR Consulting developed a Fault Tree (FT) and Analysis (FTA) on failures of subsea Blow-Out Preventer (BOP) components, equipment, and systems. The probabilistic study made use of the developed fault tree and industry reported failure data (JIP RapidS53). The failure data used was collected in 2017-2018 from drilling rigs with BOP systems operating in the Gulf of Mexico. The main objective of the FTA of the subsea BOP was to develop a qualitative fault tree and use it to estimate the probability of the BOP system being unable to secure and seal the well (top event). The output of the […]

PFD overpressure protection SIF on production header

MAR Consulting supported performing and documenting a Probability of Failure on Demand (PFD) calculation. Due to the addition of new wells to the offshore producing platform in the Norwegian Continental Shelf (NCS), an hazard analysis identified a potential overpressure scenario. The production header has mechanical protection (relief valves) and a Safety Instrumented Function as a redundant barrier. Hence, MAR Consulting calculated the average PFD for this low demand Safety Instrumented Function (SIF). The PFD, when compared to the required risk reduction for this scenario, is acceptable for a number of new wells.

Mini-FSA stage 3 equipment for an SPS

MAR Consulting performed a functional safety assessment (FSA) stage 3 for an engineering contractor and equipment supplier to a subsea production system (SPS). The SPS will be installed and operated in the Norwegian Continental Shelf (NCS). The equipment designed by the engineering company constituted the boundary for the FSA. The equipment is similar to the SPS currently in production in the tie-in field. Hence, the FSA focused mainly on installation, commissioning, and validation activities. MAR Consulting acted as an independent assessor to the project. The objectives were to ensure the equipment is fit for the safety instrumented functions; and is […]

Implementation barrier management tool for oil and gas operator in Norway

MAR Consulting will support the technical implementation of a barrier management system into a built-for-purpose tool. The contract is with a major operator in the Norwegian Continental Shelf (NCS). The main purpose of the cloud software tool is to document and provide an overview of the status of all barriers and respective performance standards at any time. In other words, the interactive tool provided constantly updated visualizations of barrier status. This is a step forward from the traditional static barrier management systems and documentation. Depending on the success of the initial pilot, the same tool will be deployed for the […]
